When most mobile wireless networks were planned and deployed, providing the necessary outdoor coverage and capacity was primary while ensuring seamless coverage to the indoor environment was secondary.
When there is a need to provide temporary additional capacity for, say, a sporting event, or if there is a need to provide emergency coverage in remote areas where there is none, operators generally deploy a Cell on Wheels (COW) to the site. A COW includes a full or Mini Base Transceiver Station (BTS) along with a microwave backhaul.
In the deployment of any wireless network, often the coverage provided any given cell site is not complete. In the outdoor network, hills, buildings, tunnels block coverage, and so on, creating shadow areas.
